May Session Kicks-off with Largest Group of Students Yet

As we’re rounding into the final stretch of our inaugural program year, Code Kentucky is excited to announce our largest pool of students yet for our May session that began last week. Over 150 students from Eastern and Northern Kentucky enrolled in a course for our summer session that runs through the end of July.

Continuing from January, we are offering a pathways model that allows students to select from one of three subjects for a deep-dive of two, 12-week courses in a chosen area: Web Development with JavaScript, Data Analysis with Python, or Software Development with C#. Prospective students interested in learning more about the pathways can check out our Pre-work Wiki for more info.

Throughout the 12-week course, students must complete the required curriculum through Pluralsight, attend a weekly meetup with fellow students and mentors, submit a project showcasing the skills they’ve learned, and complete some job readiness requirements. Students are encouraged to complete two subsequent courses to complete their pathway.

The success of our program relies heavily on the participation of volunteer mentors, who are seasoned software developers looking to give back by helping students troubleshoot and better understand learning concepts. We welcomed 23 volunteer mentors this session, including some newcomers as well as returners from previous sessions.

As a staff, we keep a close eye on industry and labor market trends to ensure we are training the new wave of tech talent with valuable skills to bolster the tech workforce in Kentucky. We’ve already had a few students land exciting new jobs in tech, and we’re looking forward to helping many more in the months and years to come! In February, we received the exciting news that our funding has been extended for a second program year, and we look forward to continuing our success.
