Mentor for Code Kentucky

Code Kentucky would not be possible without all of the amazing support we get from our network of mentors. Are you looking for a way to give back while supporting the next wave of tech talent across the Commonwealth? Consider volunteering as a Code Kentucky mentor!

Why mentor?

  • Pay it forward: Help the next generation of developers grow into full-fledged junior devs.

  • Sharpen your skills: You don’t have to be an expert developer or teacher to mentor. Help our students solve problems, and you’re likely to learn something along the way.

  • Challenge yourself: Step outside of your comfort zone.

  • Have fun: Join a growing and vibrant community of students, mentors, staff, and community partners all interested in growing the tech community in Kentucky.

You’ll also have first-hand access to the latest and greatest emerging junior devs who may be a great fit to recruit for your own team. Over 650 graduates from our sister program, Code Louisville, are working in the tech industry already, and that number is growing quickly.

“That sounds awesome,” you’re probably saying to yourself right now. “But what will I have to do exactly?”

Mentor requirements:

  • Meet virtually via Zoom one night a week from 6-8pm ET during the 12 week course

  • Facilitate icebreakers and code challenges in class (don’t worry - we help provide them!)

  • Spend about 1-3 hours per week on our Slack channel outside of class to help students troubleshoot and answer any questions that come up

  • Assist students with roadblock resolution, including technical and non-technical help so they can overcome barriers

Specifics on our upcoming January 2022 session:

Our second-ever session kicks-off the week of January 10, and will run through April 1, 2022. With this session, we’re moving to a pathways model to give students the opportunity to delve into a topic that interests them most. Each pathway consists of two consecutive 12-week courses. The following courses will be available for our upcoming session:

  • Web Development with JavaScript part 1 (HTML, CSS, JavaScript)

  • Web Development with JavaScript part 2 (a deeper dive into JavaScript for students who complete the current intro course)

  • Software Development with C# part 1 (C#, .Net, SQL)

  • Data Analysis with Python part 1 (Python, SQL)

We will confirm more details, including class night, closer to the start of the session.
